Is Empowering Australian Students for Academic Success
NAPLAN Preparation Guide
What is NAPLAN?
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy) is Australia’s nationwide assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. This important evaluation helps educators and families understand a student’s progress in essential skills and identifies areas where additional support may be beneficial.
While participation is highly recommended for all students in these year levels, NAPLAN is not mandatory. Parents can choose to withdraw their children from the assessments if they wish.
Important Insight:
NAPLAN is not a pass/fail exam! It's a valuable tool that provides insights into your child's learning journey and highlights areas where they might benefit from additional support.
When and How is NAPLAN Administered?
NAPLAN takes place during Term 1 each year, with schools having a nine-day window to schedule the tests in this specific order:
Writing
Students create either a narrative or persuasive response to a prompt
Reading
Comprehension assessment through various text types
Language Conventions
Spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills evaluation
Numeracy
Mathematical skills and problem-solving assessment
Digital Assessment:
NAPLAN is now primarily administered online, with the exception of Year 3 writing which remains paper-based. The adaptive testing format means questions adjust based on student responses, providing a more personalized assessment experience.
What Does NAPLAN Assess?
NAPLAN evaluates four key learning areas essential for academic success:
Reading
Measures comprehension skills - how well students understand, interpret, and analyze various texts
Writing
Assesses ability to create structured, coherent narratives or persuasive texts with appropriate language conventions
Language Conventions
Tests spelling, grammar, punctuation, and understanding of Standard Australian English
Numeracy
Evaluates mathematical understanding across number sense, measurement, geometry, and statistics
NAPLAN Test Timing
Each test has specific time allocations that vary by year level. Students needing additional support can request extra time.
Year 3
Writing: 40 min
Reading: 45 min
Language: 45 min
Numeracy: 45 min
Year 5

Year 7 & 9

Breaks Between Tests
Students must receive a minimum 20-minute break if sitting more than one test on the same day, ensuring they can perform at their best throughout the assessment period.
Understanding NAPLAN Results
NAPLAN uses four proficiency standards to report student achievement:
ExceedingÂ
Student is performing above expectations for their year level
Strong
Student is meeting expected standards for their year level
Developing
Student is working toward expectations and may benefit from additional support
Needs Support
Student is not meeting expectations and requires significant support
Results Timeline:
NAPLAN results are typically available by Term 3. Your child's report will show their achievement against the proficiency standards and how they compare to the national average.
Effective Preparation Strategies
Success in NAPLAN comes from building confidence and skills through consistent practice rather than last-minute cramming.
Healthy Routine
Ensure balanced diet, hydration, and plenty of rest before assessments
Open Communication
Discuss concerns and validate your child's feelings about the tests
Everyday Learning
Incorporate literacy and numeracy into daily activities like shopping or cooking
Targeted Practice
Use quality online resources for short, regular practice sessions
After The Test
Allow your child time to recharge after NAPLAN. The mental exertion deserves recognition, and a break from formal homework can help restore their energy and enthusiasm for learning.
